February Update

Hello everyone,

Thank you for the further positive comments regarding my book. I am very pleased to have been able to bring back memories of Diss past and thank you also for the lovely comments about the new images.

One thing I must apologise for is that it has come to my attention that during the editing process, 'Mawson' became 'Mason' in one of the references. Sincere apologies.

You may well have seen in the media that new film footage from @norfolkmemories has just been uploaded to youtube. You can see it here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rVyU8VsQBzc&feature=youtu.be. The films were recorded in the 1940s by Stanley Youngs around the town.

I am very pleased to say that I have been asked to do further titles in the same series of books, so if you have any comments on what should be included in a book looking at 'Swaffham and District', please get in touch! I hope to be working on this over the summer break in my MSc with a view to publishing before Christmas.

02 January 2013 Update

Hi all,

I have had some lovely feedback regarding Diss and District Through Time so far, including contact from several people who know individuals featured in my book - if you have more information about any of the photographs featured then do let me know and I'll feed that back to the relevant archive(s) as I know they would be pleased to add the information to each file.

I'd also like to take the opportunity to address the comment on a blog elsewhere that the lack of images from the Suffolk side of the border was "frustrating". I do apologise if this has disappointed anyone. I thought long and hard about which parishes to include within the "district" and I'm a Suffolk girl, so would have liked to include some images. However, the line has to be drawn somewhere, and the existing boundary of Norfolk and Suffolk was the most practical one to use. Not only does the County border fall to the south of Diss, but the hundred, archdeaconry and the registration district border. Additionally, county archives follow diocesan borders and libraries the county borders. I particularly wanted to use images that, for the most part, have not been published before. This meant spending a very long time ordering up and looking through uncatalogued photograph collections in Norfolk, and would have been hard to replicate where access is more difficult due to travel.

So, all in all, I apologise for any disappointment, but one day I would hope to feature this area in another book! Perhaps one looking at Eye and surrounding parishes. In the meantime, there are several other books available which feature Wortham, Palgrave, Fersfield etc - search the Local Studies catalogues for Norfolk and Suffolk for inspiration :-)

Welcome to my Diss & District Through Time Comments Page

As you may know, Diss & District Through Time has reached book shops this month. It would be great to hear from you if you have read the book and would like to comment on anything contained - the caption word count did not allow for expansive stories, but here, you can highlight people, dates and relevant information if you wish (although please don't post anything that another person might not want you to reveal!). Alternatively, feel free to email me.

If you find an inaccuracy in the book, please let me know. Much of the information came from trade directories, census records, maps and newspaper articles, but of course these aren't always flawless sources.

I hold my hands up now and apologise that the date on the football team photo says 1973/4 not 1963/4 which we believe to be the correct date - if you know better, let me know.
